Meade #777 Off-axis guider

The #777 Off-Axis Guider provides a means, during long-exposure astrophotography, for the photographer to monitor the tracking of the telescope, to assure that the telescope remains precisely positioned on the object being photographed. Like the T-Adapter, the Guider couples the camera body to the telescope but it also causes a small amount of the guidestar's incoming light to be diverted at a right angle, where the star's position can be examined for tracking errors with an illuminated reticle eyepiece; position corrections can then be effected using the telescope's hand controller or drive corrector.

Simply hold a Mylar viewer at arms length, close to a light bulb, to see this defect. The protective properties of the Black Polymer are throughout the substrate so there is never a concern about safety.

Making a Refractor Telescope

How to Design, Grind, Polish, Test, Correct and Mount a Doublet Lens. This is a hands-on book for the amateur who has always thought making a refractor was too difficult to even consider. Since publication of Albert Ingall's first volume of Amateur Telescope Making, amateurs, using rudimentary tools, have made thousands of telescopes. In spite of the superior image forming capability of the unobstructed refractor, most of these instruments have used a parabolic mirror. There is a general perception that making a lens is an almost insurmountable task for an amateur. This is aided and abetted by the lack of literature on the subject of lens making for amateurs. The author's spreadsheet programs, included on CD-ROM, provide a direct approach to designing a well corrected lens. For those not interested in lens design, prescriptions are provided for several lenses ranging in aperture from 3 to 8 inches.

The Everything Astronomy Book

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and felt overwhelmed by its mystery? Maybe you tried to figure out which twinkling lights were stars and which were planets-or the differences among meteors, meteorites, and meteoroids-but never quite got it.

The Everything® Astronomy Book, by noted SETI Institute scientist Dr. Cynthia Phillips, helps you stargaze with authority. The book not only provides clear descriptions of all the theories of the origins of the universe, it explains the facts about the planets, moons, and stars in language anyone can understand-completely free of the usual astro-jargon. In addition, common myths are debunked: Find out why the Big Dipper is not an actual constellation, and that a shooting star isn’t really a star at all!

S$55

NightWatch

Nightwatch continues its tradition of being the best handbook for the beginning astronomer. Terence Dickinson covers all the problems beginners face, starting with the fact that the night sky does not look the way a modern city-dweller expects. He discusses light pollution, how to choose binoculars and telescopes, how to pronounce the names of stars and constellations, telescope mounts, averted vision, and why the harvest moon looks especially bright. Most of the lovely photographs in the book were taken by amateurs, which gives the section on astrophotography a particularly inspirational gleam. Spiral-bound to lie flat or to fold back undamaged, it's a field guide that pulls its own weight in the field.

Real Astronomy with Small Telescopes

This book is about using an 80mm refractor / 90mm Maksutov as more than a "quick look" instrument, but rather something capable of use as an introduction to scientific observations. Emphasis is on measurement and discovery activities rather than on casual observing. There are two objectives to these activities: to re-enact the process of discovery and to provide amateur observers with the knowledge and skill that will help them make genuine contributions to the field of astronomy.

It is often said that users of small telescopes can conduct worthwhile scientific work, but 'how' is seldom explained except in the context of observations carried out by the most advanced amateur astronomers. This book provides the necessary introduction — derived from the author's many year of experience in teaching the subject — that will be the starting point for serious work.

Users will find many activities and projects suitable for an 80mm refractor or 90mm reflector or Maksutov that have not been published elsewhere.

Using the Meade ETX

More than any other small telescope, the Meade ETX has revolutionized amateur astronomy. Since it was introduced in 1996, it has become the standard by which others are judged, combining low price with optical excellence, a solid mounting, and - with the introduction of the EC models - computerized "GO TO" capabilities. The smallest ETX is a refractor, just 60 mm aperture; the largest is a 127 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain. But what can you really see well with these remarkable telescopes? Californian amateur Mike Weasner explains how to get the very best from an ETX, what to expect, and even how to photograph what you can view. This book also contains a large number of hints and tips from other ETX users from around the world. If you own or plan to own a Meade ETX, read this book.
